The Truth About The Recent IARC Report

24/09/2009

The minimal and manageable risk of this exposure circumstance causing non-melanoma skin cancer is significantly outweighed by the fact that UVR exposure is not only beneficial but also is necessary to sustain human life. In fact, this listed item is the only one that is necessary in order to sustain human life and, inexplicably and unacceptably, neither IARC nor NTP mention this important fact. read more...

White Europeans 'only evolved 5,500 years ago after food habits changed'

31/08/2009

Children with fair skins are able to get their daily dose of Vitamin D with just 10 to 20 minutes in the sun. But research has shown that sun-protective skin pigments in black children means that it takes up four times as long for the skin to produce enough of the vitamin.

Health Unit's view on tanning beds is misleading

27/08/2009

Consider this hypocrisy: The dermatology community still continues to use indoor tanning equipment in dermatology offices to treat psoriasis and other purely cosmetic disorders - a treatment called "phototherapy." If what was widely reported last week were actually true, then the dermatology profession would be guilty of that which they accuse indoor tanning facilities: of increasing women's risk of melanoma in exchange for treating a non-lethal disease, which would violate the "never do harm" provision of a physician's Hippocratic Oath.

IARC DATA NOT NEW INFORMATION

24/08/2009

None of these was double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, as they simply looked back over other studies and tried as best they could to amalgamate all the results. But the studies included only fair-skinned people, who have been long proven to be more susceptible to melanoma read more...

Publice Response

30/07/2009

Media reports comparing indoor tanning to toxins like mustard gas, cigarettes, and arsenic are outrageously overhyped. The same "group 1" category includes red wine, salted fish, and regular sunlight-so these sensational headlines are as absurd as saying "A glass of merlot is as deadly as mustard gas." read more...

The research could help to explain why the incidence of MS in NZ is higher in the south, where there is less sunlight.

Pregnancy & Vitamin D

04/06/2009

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO GET THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE ACROSS?...

One good thing you can do is simply tell every pregnant woman and women thinking of getting pregnant that she needs more Vitamin D, a lot more. Pregnant women need a minimum of 5,000 IU per day and even that dose will not achieve 25(OH)D levels of >50 ng/ml in all women.

Sunshine CAN add years to your life

18/05/2009

Ed Yong of Cancer Research UK said: "The amount of sunlight it takes to make enough vitamin D is always less than the amounts that cause reddening or burning so it should be possible to get the benefits of this vitamin without increasing the risk of skin cancer.

Why don't the New Zealand supposed experts look at these benefits in the same way as European, Asian and American counterparts?

The great health debate: is sunshine a miracle cure

10/02/2009

Since vitamin D has been shown to play a protective role in a number of internal cancers and possibly a range of other diseases, it is important to study the relative risks to determine whether advice to avoid sun exposure may be causing more harm than good in some populations

But most controversial of all is his call for people to sunbathe far more frequently than currently advised. "It is time for the UK government to encourage people to sunbathe safely to reduce cancer risk,"  Oliver Gillie, of the Health Research Forum says

SunSmart not so smart

22/10/2008

Sunsmart not so smart?
INTANZ says the consequences of absolute sun avoidance are many, and of grave concern. Vitamin D synthesis is paramount- food or supplemental supply of vitamin D is less reliable than that from sunlight. The links between low vitamin D levels and chronic disease including breast, prostate and colon cancers are well documented. Additionally, people are at far greater risk of sunburn from excessive exposure to UV light if their skin is regularly shielded from it.

Vitamin D focus on children & Infants

29/09/2008

Because of concerns about skin cancer, many people now wear sunscreen, which inhibits the body's ability to use sunlight to make the vitamin. The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto says that sunscreen with an SPF above 8 blocks all vitamin D production through the skin. And darker-skinned individuals living in Canada and the United States may be at particular risk because they have more melanin in their skin, which means they need more sunlight than a lighter-skinned person to make the same amount of vitamin D. read more...

Melanoma: Coincidental Correlation Does Not Prove Causation

27/08/2008

Coincidental vs. Causal Correlation. Research reveals that there is only a coincidental correlation-not a causal correlation-between UVR and CMM; therefore, neither sunlight nor a tanning device can be blamed for causing this disease. Think of this in terms of a post hoc ergo propter hoc relationship, in which it is incorrectly believed that one event comes before and, therefore, causes another when, in fact, the two events were examples of coincidental correlation-not cause and effect. read more...

NZ SUNBED INDUSTRY FIGHTS BACK

26/08/2008

``Human beings need ultraviolet light for survival, and for health,'' says Brown. ``The sun-scare mentality we are seeing now is dangerous, and irresponsible. Especially here in New Zealand where we have such a high level of UVB radiation in our sunshine, people need to be more aware of how to get the sunlight they need while staying protected. Absolute avoidance is not the way to go about it, and neither, in most cases, is 24/7 year-round SPF application. Certified indoor tanning salons will play a key role in helping Kiwis understand the complexities of ultraviolet light exposure.'' read more...

Background to Sun Scare Scandal

19/08/2008

The American Academy of Dermatology, for decades, has kept up a drumbeat on behalf of faith in an epidemic of melanoma and rays of the sun as the major cause of it, at the same time that it has flayed, incessantly, the tanning bed industry. Although the organization is termed an Academy, never has it presented in fashion academic a whit of evidence, available readily, contrary to its position entrenched, namely, there is no epidemic of melanoma ... and that tanning beds have not been proven to be a cause direct of melanoma. read more...

NEW YORK TIMES CALLS OUT DECEPTIVE SKIN CANCER ADVERTS

14/01/2008

Doctors across the USA are up in arms about the campaign's deceptive message and misrepresentation of the facts about skin cancer and UV light. Particularly offensive to health professionals is the ad's message that skin cancer victims are entirely responsible for their disease, which doctors point out is completely unsupported by evidence. In fact, skin cancer deaths represent less than 2% of all cancer deaths. The overwhelming majority of these deaths are due to melanoma, which represents only 6% of all cases of skin cancer.
